The Association of People with Disability is a 44-year-old organisation with the belief that disabled individuals should be contributory members of society. Based on this, the organisation runs multi-faceted programmes for all age groups within their centre as well as in the community and work with approximately 2,500 persons annually.
Some of the important units are as follows:
- the Orthotic training centre which saw the completion of the 13th batch in 2003 and manufactures approximately 1,100 orthotic and prosthetic items every year
- the Industrial training centre aims to rehabilitate young persons with disability by provision of technical training for enhancing their employability and entrepreneurial skills. Most of the trainees who completed the course secured jobs. In the year 2003, four trainees participated in the World Badminton competition and won 2nd prize
- the Horticulture unit which is the most established unit of the organisation
- and The Urban Slums Outreach Programme which has been established in 12 major slums of Bangalore, working directly with 950 people with disability and reaching out to approximately 13500 people. The aim of the programme is to ensure that children with disability benefit from appropriate education, transfer skills to family members, local teachers and community groups to enable them to effectively manage independently
Annual programme budget: Approx Rs.142 Lakh.
Association of People with Disability is a registered society (S/ 2179) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
