Celebrating the spirit of survival amongst children, the name speaks for itself: in translation, Salaam Baalak is 'salute to the children'. Inspired by the lives of street children who were also a part of her movie - SALAAM BOMBAY - director Mira Nair, established the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) in 1988.
Today, it provides shelters for the development of street children through an enabling environment, helping them to become part of mainstream society. While respecting the self-reliance of the street/working child, SBT provides:
- the essentials of food, shelter, health - and love
- education and community initiatives
- contact points, counselling programmes and drop-in centres
- repatriation, rehabilitation and follow-up services
- theatre, street plays, puppetry training as well as HIV care and support facilities
- vocational training and job placement
Annual programme budget: Rs. 100 Lakh.
Salaam Baalak Trust is a registered charitable trust (7654/4) and all donations are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
